I remember the day Abdulhakeem, my husband, and Madayen’s executive producer, Sultan, walked out of the Tahoe. Their lips were cracked, it looked like they didn’t sleep in days. When I ran over to Hakeem, first in excitement, but then in fear for how sickly they looked, his voice was so cracked he could barely answer me.
That was my “oh, shit, filmmaking is going to kill him” moment. With time, and funny stories, and more time, and bigger tragedies, I let go of my fears so he can pursue his calling, just as he empowers me to pursue mine.
After this particular screening, Hakeem is going to talk about what happened behind the scenes. The untold troubles, the insecurities, the confusion, and then ultimately, the payoff.
